Poll Worker
Poll workers are selected by the appointing board, which consists of the probate judge, sheriff,
and circuit court clerk. Code of Alabama, §17-8-1(a). The appointing
board makes the appointments based on a list of nominations supplied by the county
executive committee of each political party. Code of Alabama, §17-8-5.
The list provides recommended poll workers who are qualified electors in each voting
precinct. The county executive committees must provide their list no later
than forty five (45) days before the election. Code of Alabama, §17-8-5.
Members of a candidate’s immediate family to the second degree of kinship and any
member of a candidate’s principal campaign committee are not eligible for appointment.
Code of Alabama, §17-8-1(a).
The appointing board must appoint poll workers between twenty (20) and fifteen (15) days prior
each election. Code of Alabama, §17-8-1(a). Once the appointments
are made, the probate judge mails a letter notifying the poll worker of his or her
appointment. Code of Alabama, §17-8-2. Poll workers must attend a school
of instruction that must be held no later than five (5) days prior to the election.
Code of Alabama, §17-8-9.
